A standard oil seal consists of an outer circular metal disk with an inner flexible rubber which is affixed to the metal during vulcanization. The bonded seal has no loose parts to allow leakage of oil or ingress of any contaminants. This kind of seal is more accurate, and can easily be fitted into a smaller space. An example is shown in Figure 2.9.
Smear clean engine oil on the pulley sleeve and seal, then refit the pulley with the key and keyway aligned. Tighten the bolt to the correct torque (consult a service manual or a dealer if in doubt).
One of the primary advantages of natural rubber gaskets is their excellent sealing properties. Due to their inherent elasticity and compression set resistance, natural rubber gaskets can effectively conform to irregular surfaces, creating a tight seal that prevents fluids or gases from leaking. The low temperature resistance of standard FKM is limited to -15 ˚C.

This separation must be accomplished between surfaces in relative motion, usually a shaft or bearing inner ring and a housing. With correct installation, oil seals can also prevent seal leakage and maintain the lubricity of a bearing to ensure that the rotary shaft and its bearings remain fully functional.
