The sides of a French skillet are taller than those of a typical frying pan, with sides about 2 inches steep (depending on the dimensions of the skillet). While they are usually straight, some French skillets have slightly rounded or sloped sides.

Both skillets & frying pans refer to the same types of pan, and there is no need to look for features to distinguish between them.

Typically made by adding a non-stick coating to aluminum pans, non-stick frying pans are ideal for cooking delicate foods with a tendency to stick, such as fish, fried eggs, and pancakes. Bare cast iron frying pans are uncoated and therefore prone to rust. To prevent this, they can be seasoned with oil, which closes up the pores and prevents contact with water. After seasoning, cast iron pans don't need to be washed with soap and water after every use. Simply wipe the pan down with a pot. If the pan is very dirty, it can be washed but it will have to be re-seasoned.

When cleaning enameled cast iron cookware, avoid using abrasive cleaners or metal brushes to avoid scratching the enamel surface. It’s best to use a mild detergent and a soft cloth to clean enamel cookware. In addition, regularly apply a layer of cooking oil to the enamel surface to prevent rust and maintain its luster.
